Emily Anne Miller of Irene is pursuing a Dance Performance/Choreography major and a double minor in Entertainment Management and Accounting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Emily Anne is a Dean's List student, and a recipient of the Dance Educators of America Scholarship, CSUN Scholarship, Western University Exchange Scholarship, and the Kenneth and Mary Alice DeVous Fine Arts Scholarship. Emily has also been awarded a full scholarship to attend and study with the Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Company in Chicago after graduation. Emily Anne will graduate Suma Cum Laude next December after taking a semester off to fulfill her duties as Miss South Dakota USA. She plans to pursue her career after graduation as a New York Radio City Rockette or as a dancer on Broadway.
In her leisure time, Emily Anne enjoys wakeboarding, modeling, running and traveling. Emily Anne was a competitive college wake boarder for two years at the Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As a dancer for 17 years, she has won numerous awards for dance. Emily Anne was also selected by the UNLV Dance Department to dance and perform in Seoul, Korea, as an exchange program with the Korean University. She was also one of four dancers chosen to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in Australia, which is the largest fine arts festival in the world. There she was recognized as one of the best outstanding dance solos.
Philanthropy and volunteerism are important components in Emily Anne's life and she has several charities that are especially close to her heart. Some of her favorite charities include Children's Miracle Network, the Painted Turtle, a camp for children with life threatening illness, and volunteering with her local elementary school. Emily Anne has a strong commitment toward ending childhood obesity. The rate of childhood obesity has nearly tripled since the 1980's and currently affects more than 45% of our nations youth. During her reign as Miss South Dakota USA, Emily Anne will continue to bring more attention to the topic of childhood obesity in the United States. She will also plans to visit elementary schools to mentor children about the importance of physical activity and nutrition. Her hope is that after she served her year of service as Miss South Dakota USA, she has educated our youth, young adults, parents, and our communities about getting active and eating healthier with just small changes to their lifestyles. Emily Anne said as Miss South Dakota USA would allow her to continue to educate today's youth and adults by spreading her message throughout the state and hopes to leave her mark as an advocate of her platform.
